Do Farm Vehicles Need Insurance?

If you have a vehicle that you primarily use for farming or ranching — a pickup truck, van, farm truck tractor, farm truck (weighing one ton or more) and trailer — you may be wondering: Do farm vehicles need insurance? Like other vehicles you see on the road, if the vehicle you use for farming or ranching enters a public roadway, it needs to have auto insurance coverage. Because accidents happen, you’ll want to be sure your farm vehicle insurance is adequate so you, your farm or ranch and the people who count on you are protected.

There are different types of farm vehicle insurance coverage available, depending on whether you use your farm or ranch vehicle to travel from your farm or ranch to home, home to town and vice versa. Your Farm Bureau insurance agent can help you determine which coverage fits your needs based on how your vehicle is used.

Here’s what you need to know about farm vehicle insurance.

Types of Farm Vehicle Insurance Coverage

Bodily Injury Liability: Hopefully, your farm or ranch vehicle is never involved in an accident. But accidents can’t be predicted, so having this coverage can protect you and your operation.

Property Damage Liability: With property damage liability coverage, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’ll be protected if your farm or ranch vehicle causes damage to someone else’s property for which you are liable.

Medical or No-fault Coverage: This type of coverage varies by state — contact your Farm Bureau insurance agent for more information.

Comprehensive: Since comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your insured farm vehicle due to causes other than collision — including fire, theft, vandalism and malicious mischief — you’ll know your vehicle will be protected. It’s also a good idea to carry this type of farm vehicle coverage if you live in an area where you experience severe weather, including wind, hail and flooding.

Collision:  Collision coverage pays for damage to your insured farm vehicle or trailer caused by an accidental collision or overturning.

Uninsured and Underinsured: This coverage protects you and your passengers from bodily injury caused by other drivers that do not have adequate amounts of auto insurance.
